If you intend to capture this type of photography, you should choose the raw image format (RAW). In addition, you should pay attention to the subject to make them stand out on the black and white background.
Here are the notes:
RAW mode
Simply, with the RAW format, you can easily edit photos easily by editing software like Photoshop.
You should not take black and white photos with the built-in (monochrome) setting on the camera. Because most of the camera will take color photos before turning to black and white. In this regard, the image editing software outperforms the camera.
Contrast
The contrast between the two shades of light and dark is the decisive factor of a beautiful black and white photo. Contrast is a “good friend” of black and white photographers. As it creates the details and nuances of the subject without the need for different colors. However, it is important to note that too strong contrasts in black and white images sometimes produce bad effects.
You should not take pictures on hot sunny days, but choose the days of shady, light sun to get the better black and white pictures.
Pattern and architecture
Patterns, architecture often do not have much impression if they are taken with ordinary colors. However, they will be more attractive if the photographer uses single-color tone. So, before the shooting, select the point to highlight on the pattern, then select the black and white tone, you will see the difference.
During post-production (converting to black and white), please note that depending on the editing engine, the results will be different. For digital color photos, note that blue, red has a higher noise index than green.
ISO noise control
ISO indicates the sensitivity of the sensor on the camera. The larger the ISO is, the higher the sensitivity is. The higher ISO setting means that you can take pictures in low light without flash.
With black and white photography, you should set the ISO to the lowest level supported by the camera to get the highest image resolution. Because the higher the ISO setting is, the more visible the pixels (noise).
The subject of black and white photos
In the black and white photo, you can use simple subjects such as stones, flowers, or anything around that the viewer can conceive of the contrast of the black and white in the photo. However, a black and white image with only one subject is usually the first option when holding the camera. This type is often associated with portraits.
When capturing large spaces (landscape shots), make sure that the subjects in the final image will not be of the same color, making the image look bleaker and more monotonous. To do this, add a moving subject such as ocean waves or clouds to the frame because what we think really does not make sense in everyday life can become more noticeable once they are captured by the camera lens.
